Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a communications protocol that is used to send voice and media services through the internet to an IP PBX. PBXs (Private Branch Exchange) connect telephone extensions to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and internal phone extensions. Traditional PBXs delivers voice calls through the PSTN.
SIP Trunking delivers all forms of media including voice, data and video over a data network. Instead of having a physical wire, a SIP Trunks is a virtual phone like that’s provided by a SIP trunk provider which removes the necessity of a traditional phone service connection and eliminates the need for analogue phone lines. As a result, SIP is usually preferred by companies with multiple office locations or remote workers, whose employees rely on multimedia communications.
Choosing a SIP Trunk solution doesn’t mean that you have to get rid of your existing phone system. Your current PBX system can still be used if it is compatible with a SIP solution and your phone numbers won’t need to be changed. If you need new equipment, we can give you SIP ready ISDN options that you can integrate to your telephone system.
Under most calling plans, charges are calculated based on the physical length of the PSTN needed to complete the call. Calls made via SIP trunks bypass most of the PSTN which in turn avoids many long-distance charges. SIP providers also frequently offer better rates on international calls than traditional phone service providers while internal calls and calls between branch offices are frequently free when connected via SIP trunking.
SIP trunks extend your office communications options by allowing remote offices, mobile employees and customers communicate as if they were in the same building. Employees will no longer be tied to their desk phones for communication as SIP client applications enables them to conduct communication through devices that can connect to the internet and allows them to access phone capabilities such as voicemail, SMS messaging and more.
Since there are no physical telephone lines to connect or relocate, it is easier for a business to move their phone system and to add, remove and edit user users. Additional call capacity can be added and activated immediately, and it will be relatively easy to connect or disconnect call lines to suit your current business requirements.
